We recently had an opportunity to interview G Tom Mac aka Gerard McMann. His body of work as an artist & songwriter has covered a massive array of ground from his powerful Goth pop classic Cry little sister he wrote and performed for the movie the Lost Boys through the many diverse films & TV shows he has featured songs in from “Chasing Amy”, to Ice Cubes “The Players Club” to mention a few, and a wide variety of TV shows that range from “Scrubs” “ the Shield”. Along with a prolific amount of songs that have been covered by KISS, Carley Simon, Robert Plant & Roger Daltrey.
IRM: What song would you say you are most proud of?
GTM: The song I’m most proud of writing would be “Half” as it was such a stretch of a song for me.
IRM: If there was a song you could take back because it just never met your expectations when you released it, which one would it be?
GTM: No song I have a regret. I learned by the odd bad cover & the flops.
IRM: You have $5 to spend on dinner, what are you eating?
GTM: Dinner with just a regular, very wise, old person that lived & has not an ounce of regret.
IRM: Let me ask you about Cry Little Sister. The phenomemon was that a great movie was associated with that music and they were kind of inseparable as the movie became a cult classic, but when you remixed Cry Little Sister and re-released it – the phenomenon is a little different this time – what’s the difference?
GTM: The first will always be the one that breeds the deepest depth for me. I poured everything into it to make it not just be another song of its time. As for the remix it proved I wrote a good song that takes a lot to f*** up! But the remix was every bit of heart felt in it’s new blood way.
IRM: We’ve heard several great tracks from you, including Cry Little Sister, Box of Fantasy, and You Are, is there a particular tune that is a bit more special to you than another?
GTM: I have a soul drip for my song Gotta get on with it as it expresses something I never addressed before, that is losing someone that you can’t save from them self in a bad way. But yeah I’m quick to rock the f*** out again.
IRM: How old were you when you seriously picked up your first instrument, and what instrument did you start with? What was that first draw to create music?
GTM: I was 12 & it was guitar & bass all in the same first year. Trying to figure out all these cool Bowie songs. & Todd Rundgren stuff.
IRM: You and several of the 1987 Lost Boys cast members have gotten together for interviews and such recently, and I understand you are starting a project with one of the cast members – would you like to tell us a little about that?
GTM: Doing a reality show with Corey Haim a bit of a “boot camp music is the cure but you got clean up dude!” kind of show, we hope it to be positive. I hate reality shows in general. Corey & myself will be doing a series of Horror Lost Boys related conventions as well this year.
IRM: You are well known as being a guy who just knows what is going to be popular at a particular time. We’ve seen this from the songs you’ve had featured in movies and TV shows like “Chasing Amy”, “Scrubs”, “The Shield”, Ice Cube’s “The Players Club” to mention a few – as well as the vast array of songs you’ve written that have been covered by everyone from Carly Simon to Kiss, to Robert Plant. Where do you think this sense of right music, right time, right place, comes from?
GTM: I just like & always had love fresh sounds & I demand it of myself to write new & pushing the envelope music, as well as it to kick in a briliant way live we well. That’s my modest honest.
